Batapata [ Workshop ]

Batapata International Artists’ Workshop took place at the Mutare Diocesan training Centre in Chikanga, Zimbabwe. 22 artists from Zimbabwe, Kenya, Uganda, Poland, UK, India, Pakistan and Papua New Guinea participated. The workshop in 1999 revived the previous series of Pachipamwe workshops initiated by Triangle Arts Trust in Zimbabwe between 1988 and 1994.

The Open Day was followed by a touring exhibition at the Mutare National Gallery, the Bulawayo National Gallery and the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, Harare.

Batapata was supported by number of international and national sponsors including HIVOS, Commercial Bank of Zimbabwe, The British Council and the Prince Claus Foundation.

Pachipamwe [ Workshop ]

Pachipamwe International Artists’ Workshop was held annually from 1988 to 1994 at various locations in Zimbabwe. Over 100 artists participated, half from Zimbabwe and the others from African countries, UK, USA, the Nordic countries, Jamaica and New Zealand.

Following the workshops and Open Days the work made was exhibited at annual exhibitions at the National Gallery in Harare.

Although Pachipamwe ended in 1994 it has been the inspiration for many other developments in Zimbabwe, leading to the development of the Surprise artists' association and the Batapata Workshop.

Surprise [ Residency]

Surprise is a residency programme run at Surprise Siding Arts Centre in Shirugwi, the Midlands Province, Zimbabwe, 20 km from the provincial capital, Gweru. The centre was set up by Tapfuma Gutsa, one of the key organisers of Pachipamwe workshop and Nicole Gutsa-Field, a painter. They initiated the project in 1997 by acquiring the land and building the centre.

Surprise hosted a residency programme and workshop in collaboration with Batapata artists during 2003.
