The Thupelo Workshop, initiated in Johannesburg in 1985, moved to Cape Town in 1995, and is now run from Greatmore Studios. Thupelo alos organises regional workshops at the South African National Gallery Annexe.

Greatmore Studios were set up in 1998 in Woodstock, Cape Town, in collaboration with Triangle Arts Trust and Professor Isky Gordon.

Greatmore has 13 studios, eight of which are leased to mid-career artists from a cross section of Cape Town communities. Two of them are for visiting artists on three month residencies from other parts of South Africa, and abroad. All resident and visiting artists take part in a variety of outreach programmes involving local communities.

Thupelo Johannesburg [ Workshop ]

Thupelo International Artists’ Workshop was established in Johannesburg in 1985. 'Thupelo' means 'to teach by example'.

Thupelo Workshop took place at various locations outside the city, including Hunters Rest in the Magaliesburg and the Alpha Training Centre Boedestroom, organised in collaboration with the Johannesburg Art Foundation.

The workshop ran annually until 1991. By 1989, Thupelo had established a gallery in the basement of the premises occupied by FUBA (Federated Union of Black Artists) in Newtown, which ran until 1992.

In 1995 Jill Trappler, Lionel Davis and Garth Erasmus, convened a Working Group in Cape Town and the workshop has become an established annual or biannual event. In 2006 the first Thupelo Workshop was held in Durban and in the same year at Rorke’s Drift in KwaZulu-Natal. Thupelo has been an informal feature of the art scene in South Africa for more than 20 years.
