Mbile/Insaka [ Workshop ]

www.artshost.org/insaka

5 Mbile workshops were held in Zambia in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997 and 1998 at Eagles Rest in Siavonga, 190 km south of Lusaka, on the shores of Lake Kariba. 103 artists have participated. Each workshop was set up by a working group composed of a number of Zambian artists, most of whom had previously participated in sister workshops in Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa.

At the end of each workshop an exhibition was organised at various venues including the National Heritage Centre in Lusaka, Meridien Centre in Lusaka and the Lusaka Museum.

Later years saw the setting up of a new workshop, Insaka. The first Insaka took place at Siavonga from 21 May to 3 June 2003.

www.artshost.org/rockston

Rockston was founded in 1985 by Lutanda Mwamba and David Chirwa at Garden House Hotel, Lusaka. Since its foundation, it has become an important art institution in Zambia. It aims to assist up-and-coming artists, with informal educational support, infrastructure and information and to create a space and environment where artists can research, create, reflect and interact. At Rockston the artists are encouraged to collaborate and share ideas, insights and different approaches to art making.

Rockston has been running an apprenticeship scheme and a variety of educational programmes for Zambian artists in Lusaka.
